As an Australian, I feel very connected to the sand and sea. The ocean has a profound impact on us all. Without it, our planet would be barren and I love the parallels Vincent Van Gough spoke of between humans and ocean too:
“The heart of man is very much like the sea, it has its storms, it has its tides and in its depths it has its pearls too”
Sadly though, through plastic pollution, our oceans are dying. I witnessed it with my own eyes when working with Australian Fintech WLTH. I was lucky then to travel to far north Queensland where I spent three challenging days with other volunteers cleaning some of the most beautiful yet most plastic polluted beaches in the world.
First-hand experiences like that and the learning that goes with it all gives me hope that we can bring about change and turn the tide of this disaster that is, without doubt, looming for our future generations. Greenwashing - where companies make unsubstantiated claims to deceive consumers into believing they have environmentally friendly products when they actually do not - is rampant, but there are also organisations such as WLTH who actively engage in and promote sustainable practices to help solve our plastic problem once and for all. We can and we must effect change and I will continue in my life to strive to be part of that change.
